Tetrate is the company commercializing Istio’s service mesh technology. Istio’s cloud-native platform has been around for some time, but its enterprise readiness only recently emerged, as evidenced by StackRox’s “The State of Container and Kubernetes Security” report published last winter. Established in 2018 by engineers who created Istio at Google, Tetrate brings enterprise-grade extensibility, scalability and performance happn to open source tools it powers. In its initial round of funding, it raised $12.5 million from leading institutions and names in enterprise software such as Dell Technologies Capital, Intel Capital and 8VC.

Sapphire Ventures spearheaded the Series B round, joined by investors such as Scale Venture Partners and NTTVC. Furthermore, this will support a new SaaS offering built upon Istio that makes application service mesh easier to consume.

Leveraging Istio’s open-source service mesh, their Service Mesh XL is designed with ease of deployment and management across multiple clusters such as Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud.
